Resumo: Among popular understanding, snakes are mystical beings, surrounded by distorted beliefs and views about their ecological relevance. Despite its importance, the common perception most of the times is that snakes always represent a threat. In this context, the present study aimed to investigate the perception of the inhabitants of the Massarandupió-BA Community, about snakes, seeking to understand the relationship that these people have with these animals. Data were collected from September to November 2020, through semi-structured interviews, conducted with 20 residents, 15 women and 5 men. It was found that these animals are still negatively present in the minds of most respondentes. However, the relationship between them was not so conflicted, given the fact that snakes are not killed by the majority. However, the infinity of myths and legends that are built around snakes, can contribute to a rooted culture that these animals always represent a threat to humans, which can lead to indiscriminate attack on species. And although most respondents are aware that the preservation of snakes is important, many are still unaware of the ecological role they play in nature. Thus, works that focus on environmental education regarding the biology and importance of snakes become essential, which can be an important tool to disseminate correct information about this group. Therefore, it is hoped that the information obtained will serve as indicators to create awareness and conservation strategies with communities.
