Resumo: Environmental debates on the importance of the conservation of biomes and ecosystems in Brazil have gained prominence in the news, due to the increasingly intensive human degradation of the environment, including inadequate disposal of solid waste, in areas that are highly sensitive to the maintenance of biodiversity such as mangrove, Areas of Environmental Protection (APP) and estuaries that serve as marine spawning grounds, and the basis for the subsistence of coastal populations. The focus of this research, on a traditional fishing community in the District of Mutá, an environmentally-protected area in the Bay of All Saints (BTS)of Bahia, Brazil was on the evaluation of the perception of local population son the importance of mangrove and their preservation. The goal is to propose the use of this methodological tool in environmental education on mangrove ecosystems and particularly with a focus on solid waste disposal. Using photo diagnostics as a methodological tool with which to measure and communicate environmental impacts and evaluating its use fullness from the perspective of youth from 10-15 involved in the community projects of a local residents association. The methodology was constituted in two distinct and consecutive stages, which resulted in the application of the photodiagnoistics and the interpretative analysis of the content, besides the application of the focal group for data collection. The dynamics of Environmental Education taught with the use of photography in the course of the work generated a level of awareness that promoted the intentions, registered in the speeches of young people, of changes in behaviors related to the mangrove ecosystem. The intentions were noticed, with the awakening of actions and information regarding the care, conservation and preservation of mangroves and their biodiversity, due to the importance of fishing and natural resources for the sustainability of the inhabitants of that locality, of well being for humanity and of the planet.
