Resumo: Introduction: The occupational stress of the nurse has as main characteristic the professional dissatisfaction, decrease in the production of the work, increase in absenteeism and accidents at work besides the presence of other diseases. Objective: To analyze the factors that trigger occupational stress in nurses working in the ICU. Methodology: A literature review was carried out, of an integrative nature. Data collection was performed from 2009 to 2019 from LILACS, SCIELO in addition to the VHL, Intensive Care Unit, Occupational Stress, Nursing. Results: The literary corpus consisted of 12 studies which met the inclusion criteria previously established. The ICU is composed of occupational risks that can act directly or indirectly on the nurses' quality of life and the results of their activities. It is interesting to note that in the ICU, nurses end up adopting a permanent alert posture because of the peculiarities inherent in the service routine of this sector. The preventive measures of occupational stress are carried out in two scopes of the professional and of the organization. Final Considerations: It is concluded that it is essential that health institutions offer strategies to promote the quality of life at work, as well as the implementation of measures that seek to mitigate the effects caused by occupational stress.
