Abstract

Advanced age is related to changes in motivation, manual dexterity, mobility, lucidity and existence of associated diseases, which are factors that may be responsible for urinary incontinence. Objective: Estimate the prevalence of urinary incontinence in elderly nuns living in a convent. Material and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with elderly women of at least 60 years of age, lucid and oriented, with urinary complaints. Primary data were used and the research instruments included a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Mental State Mini-Exam (MMSE) and the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire - Short Form (ICIQ-SF). Results: With respect to comorbidities, the most significant association was hypertension, osteoporosis and intestinal constipation, and it was evidenced that the existence of UI and its relation with quality of life was not significant. Already diabetes mellitus, stroke, depression, Parkinson's disease and bladder cancer were not very significant. It was observed that the frequency of intestinal constipation was associated when related to UI and similar to that found in the literature. Final considerations: However, the presence of urinary incontinence greatly interferes with the quality of life, and therefore contributes to possible psychological and physical alterations
