Thus, the objective is to highlight the importance of Cosme de Farias in the literacy process of poor Bahians during the old Republic. The methodology adopted is based on a literature review of the literature, with a qualitative approach and descriptive character, based on a theoretical survey of authors who address the topic under study. Thus, it is understood that it is undeniable the importance of Cosme de Farias as one of the main promoters of the improvements and possible eradication of illiteracy in Salvador, in the beginning of the 20th century.
