Methodology: This research is an integrative literature review, through the 6 steps recommended for this type of study. Results: 11 articles, 04 from LILACS, 03 MEDLINE and 04 BDENF, of these, 08 were carried out in Brazil, in national prison units and 03 with international penitentiaries (Turkey, England and Australia). Discussion: Despite playing an extremely important role within the prison units, the nursing professional presents several challenges to achieve the performance of care, be it basic or medium and high complexity.
