They expose the harms of chemical dependence in patients with mental disorders, especially in interference with diagnosis and treatment. Objective: Understand the relationship between schizophrenia and illicit drugs. Methodology: This is a literature review of the integrative type using the descriptors: Schizophrenia, Street Drug and Mental, with a temporal cut from 2008 to 2018 and considering articles published in English and Spanish. The specialized databases MEDLINE (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online) and VHL (Virtual Health Library) were used to survey the articles. Results: Although many people perceive some advantages with the use of substances, this excess consumption can generate negative symptoms and in relation to a mental disorder, causing in a grouping of cognitive damages and affective, biological and personal functions. Final considerations: In summary, schizophrenic patients who use illicit drugs tend to worsen their mental state already affected by the disease. Drugs impair the treatment of schizophrenia by modifying the patient's behavior. People with schizophrenic signs may dispose of illicit substances as a trigger point to progress or aggravate the aforementioned disease, also related to external factors such as genetic predisposition, environmental and psychological factors
