Exclusive breastfeeding is the best source of feeding and protection for the baby until the sixth month of life, requiring no other type of food or liquid. Objective: To identify the factors that interfere in the practice of exclusive breastfeeding. Method: This is an integrative review of the literature using the descriptors: breastfeeding, newborn and early weaning, with a temporal cut-off from 2012 to 2016. Results: Weak milk, despite being a myth, is the Main factor causing interruption of exclusive breastfeeding or early weaning. Final considerations: The lack of knowledge and encouragement of health professionals contribute to the lack of information, thus generating doubts in the practice of exclusive breastfeeding, implying its continuity.
