Family planning is a right of every Brazilian citizen and is an integral part of the set of actions to care for women, men and the couple. However, the decision on contraception still belongs to women, and male participation in family planning still occurs in a timely and limited manner. Methodology: This is a qualitative exploratory field study, whose participation in the study were ten women of reproductive age who were enrolled in the family planning service of a public maternity hospital in Salvador, having as a data collection tool a script of semi-structured interviews. Objective: To analyze the perception of women regarding male participation in the family planning consultation. Results: The women participating in the study perceived the meaning of family planning and the factors that interfere in the male participation closely related to gender relations. Final considerations: There is a need to intensify the actions that promote the understanding of what the Family Planning service means in order to provide a better understanding of the women users and the encouragement of the participation of their companions.
