    This dissertation highlights the importance of University Extension for Brazilian society, directing the debate on the history of higher education, the creation of universities and Professional Education in the country. It aims to make an analysis of the extension projects carried out by the Federal Institute of Bahia in a perspective of its social relevance. The methodological path consists of a qualitative research of bibliographical and documentary character, being analyzed nine projects of extension made by the institution, whose choice was given by the criterion of accessibility and availability of the same ones. It is concluded that, still with limitations, the extension actions of the Federal Institute of Bahia have social relevance, being able to benefit communities of its surroundings. There is a need for greater interaction with organized society, other institutions and, above all, directly with communities so that they can contribute in a more relevant way to their development.
