    Introduction: Doula is a word of greek origin that means woman serves. Traditionally, it was used to describe the one who assists the woman at home after giving birth, cooking for her, helping to take care of other children, helping with the care of the baby, among other household activities. Objective: To describe through the literature the importance of doulas in supporting women during labor. Method: This is an integrative literature review study, carried out in different databases, using original articles in Portuguese, English and Spanish, published between 2010 and 2021. Results: The role of doulas is to offer continuous support to women during labor through integrative and complementary practices that contribute positively to the evolution of labor. Conclusion: The work of doulas stands out of significant.
