It aims at presenting, analyzing and reflecting upon the aspects of production and use of family conceptions through the adoption of imagery and verbal language in textbooks. Consequently, discussions were held on textbooks, new types of family structures, family and school, as well as the relationship between them. The research was conducted throughout a literature review, integrated with a documentary research in the Coleção Buriti textbooks, by Editora Moderna, 2011-2014, selecting the areas of human sciences and languages, in the subjects History, Geography, and Portuguese, at the first part of elementary school, in the age range between six and ten years old, according to the Conselho Nacional de Ensino (CNE, 2003). The results revealed that, despite living new family types in the contemporary society, the formal and curricular basis presented in the textbooks analyzed, the nuclear family type predominates. The diverse family groups are highlighted when the text aims at discussing families. The theoretical background was chosen in interdisciplinary research areas highlighting education, sociology, and semiotics, benchmarking authors such as Bakhtin (1979, 1988); Nosela (1979); Freitag e outros (1985); Oliveira (2007); Roudinesco (2003); Dias (2007); Donati (2008); Munakata (1999, 2010, 2012); Bittencourt ( 2005); Cassiano (2003, 2005); Giddens (2004); Sarti (2004); Chauí (2007); Cavalcanti; Barbosa; Caldeira (2012); Estevão (2012).
