Abstract

In view of the increasing rates of chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCD) in the population, it was necessary to investigate new strategies to combat cardiovascular diseases and their risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, obesity and hypertriglyceridemia). Resveratrol polyphenol has attracted significant interest through the well-known French paradox and has been shown to be efficient in the treatment of CNVV. Objective: To review the literature on the use of resveratrol in cardiovascular diseases and its risk factors. Methodology: This is a review of the literature, with searches in the medline database (Pubmed) and SciELO. DECS resveratrol, cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, type 2 diabetes mellitus, Sirt1 and their respective English correlates were used. It included articles in humans, both sexes, aged above 18 years that presented cardiovascular disease or predisposition to develop it. Results: Eleven studies were included between 2011 and 2017, where 81.81% (n = 8) presented positive results, with insulin resistance and blood pressure being the most sensitive parameters. CONCLUSION: Resveratrol may be an important ally in the treatment of CNCDs, but more human studies are needed for assertive statements of its efficacy.
