Abstract
In this study analysis of publications about cangaço and the phenomenon of
northeastern banditry was made, taking into account the role of cangaço and the relationships
of dialogues, controls and tensions raised by authors who dedicated themselves to the study of
the theme in the period from 1930 to 1980. At the beginning of the Estado Novo, while the
ideals that inspired the reformists was to transform Brazil into a progressive, modern and
unitary society, the hinterland was left to shells of political chiefs and cangaceiros who
represented a danger to the project of a nation that came into force when Getulio Vargas was in
power. In the twentieth century, the authors, mostly from the Northeast region, more
concentrated in the states of: Ceará, Sergipe and Pernambuco, dedicate themselves to examining
the different policies, using sources that go through decades demonstrating the power and
alliances in the games of interests between the Government and “cangaceiros”, with Lamp
being the leader of the gang. It is interesting to note that the repercussion on Cangaço has been
discussed intensely by historians and although Lamp' s group has been defeated by the
authorities and the remainder have been fragmented by different regions of Brazil, the figure
and greatness of the man we expand the analysis to the phenomenon of social banditry and its
dynamics.
