Abstract
The present master's thesis had as general objective identify the conceptions and expectations of men in empowerment process of adoptive parenthood. For a good understanding a qualitative methodology was used, through a study of multiple cases. There were four married men participants of the Metropolitan Region of Salvador without children. They were accessed in Psychosocial and Legal Preparation Course. For data collection, was developed and used a semistructured interview. The data were analyzed in a descriptive way. The main results were: the participants conceive of adoption as a mutual exchange of love and affection between adopter and adopted. The adoption decision emerged from the couple, even if one of them had wanted it before the other. Adoption candidates interviewed conceive the parent as the person who have responsibility and give care, love and affection for the child, as well as being an example for children, educating / disciplining, stimulating talents, being present in their life and playing with them. Participants classify adoptive parenthood the same as biological fatherhood. It was also verified that the interviewee himself, along with his wife, as well as the interprofessional team, family, friends and colleagues facilitate adoption process. However, family members and interprofessional staff were also mentioned as having hampered the process, the first because they initially resisted the idea of adoption, and the latter because of the time taken to enable the couple to adopt. Finally, it was found in the men's statements that the Psychosocial and Legal Preparation Course for adoption helped them on understanding the legal process and clarifying the profile of minors that were available for adoption, the stage of coexistence, the seriousness of the adoption process and the responsibility of adoptive parents. It was concluded that on the part of men seeking adoption there was a positive expectation regarding adoptive parenting, equating the adoptive father with the biological´s ones.
