Abstract
Introduction: The early diagnosis of sepsis is clinical and complementary tests must be
performed to confirm the existence of infection, identify the infectious focus and guide the
institution of treatment to minimize the incidence of multiple organ dysfunction and the risk
of death. The role of the nurse is fundamental in this context, mainly for being directly
responsible for the nursing team and for the systematized care of the patient. Objective: to
describe nursing care in the early identification of sepsis signs and symptoms for quality care
in the Intensive Care Unit, through a literature search. Methodology: This is a review study
of the national literature on nursing actions to improve the early identification of sepsis, which
used the bases of the VHL, SCIELO and PUBMED, developed in October 2021. Inclusion
criteria were the articles published in the last five years that were available in Portuguese and
descriptors:"Sepsis" AND "intensive therapy" AND ("nursing care" OR "nursing care")
Results/Discussion: From the analysis of the publications, two specific categories emerged,
namely: 1st. Knowledge of professionals about the early identification of sepsis; 2nd Main
nursing actions for the early identification of sepsis. Conclusion: The findings point to the
need to implement protocols to optimize the service, in order to assertively and individually
develop nursing actions in the care of patients with sepsis.
