Abstract
This work aims to study the behavior of the soteropolitans when facing the side walks
of the city of Salvador nowadays, from the perspective of the right of using this public
space. To reach this objective, it was developed a research for sampling on
representative locations of the city: the old downtown and the modern downtown, a
neighborhood with high purchasing power and a neighborhood of low purchasing
one, and, yet, a neighborhood with presence of tourists, observing in these spaces,
the main road sidewalks and one track in their surroundings. Initially, will be shown
some theoretical notions about urban public space, under the focus of the street and
sidewalks and legal aspects of urban territorial issue, stressing the city guidelines
and the constitutional right of freedom of locomotion. Then, it will be examined how
the implementation of the first sidewalks of Salvador happened and the history of
legislation on those sidewalks. Finally, it will be considered how the occupation of
that space is being done in the areas surveyed, including the user impressions
obtained through interviews and the application of a questionnaire. The main
objective, is to identify and better understand how it happens the relationship
between soteropolitans and their sidewalks, and at the same time, demonstrate that
the user of the sidewalk has the right to freely use this public space without undue
obstructions, providing them comfort, safety and pleasure in coming and going
through the streets of the city.
