Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD), due to its process of gradual loss of memory, complicating cognitive functions and behavior, causes the patient to lose his autonomy and to depend on the formal caregiver and / or a family member. The person in charge of caring for this individual is responsible for meeting daily needs and when there is no knowledge about the pathology, it causes an overload, thus compromising the health of both, the caregiver and the elderly person with Alzheimer's. Objective: To know the burden of caring practiced by family members / caregivers to an elderly person with Alzheimer through an integrative literature review. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review, qualitative. Methodology: This is an integrative and qualitative literature review. Data collection took place from September to November 2019, in the BVS and SCIELO databases, using the following descriptors: Alzheimer's Disease; Aging; Family. There were found 127 articles, and after applying the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, seven articles remained. Results: It was concluded that the care practiced by the family member / caregiver is influenced by age, full time dedicated to the patient and, in addition, extra-home work with extended workload without rest. Conclusion: The elderly person with AD needs the caregiver in his activities daily, whether he is a familiar or an institutionalized one. The division of care in the family is essential to the health of both, making it a benefit to those who are caring and those who are being cared for.
