Abstract
Breast milk is the most appropriate food for the first phase of a child's life, providing protection, growth and development for children. Breastfeeding is the supply of milk directly from the breast or milk. While exclusive breastfeeding is the only supply of human milk. Objective: To know the perception of the mothers about breastfeeding. Methodology: Review of integrative literature, using descriptors: breastfeeding, perception and mothers, with a temporal cut of the last five years from 2014 to 2018, resulting in 29 articles. Results: The main results of the perception of the most important mothers were: Growth, infant development, protects against allergies, diarrhea, infections, increases the mother-child bond, weak milk perception, insufficient, crying of the child, protects the infants to develop risk for, endocrine diseases, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, weight loss and postpartum bleeding, and also causes lesions in the breast. These results have emerged in three categories of analyzes: The mothers' perception of breastfeeding for maternal and child health, breastfeeding and intercurrences that interfere with early weaning, the role of health professionals and the presence of parents in the breastfeeding process .Final considerations: There is a need for health professionals to increase information on breastfeeding from early prenatal consultations to childcare follow-up, so that this knowledge enables nurses to choose the best for maternal and child health
